President and Managing Director
David H. McKinley is a principal of McKinley Carter and serves as president and managing director of the firm. Before founding McKinley Carter, David held roles at a national investment firm and a regional bank trust department in which he led teams providing financial planning and portfolio management services to high net worth families, institutions and non-profit organizations.
David has a history of accomplishment in business and community activities. Over the years, he has been recognized by West Virginia Executive Magazine as a Young Gun in 2002, Ogden Newspaper’s Faces of the Future in 2005, and in 2006 was also a member of The State Journal’s inaugural class of Generation Next: WV’s 40 under 40.
David is a graduate of West Liberty University and the Certified Financial Planning Professional Program of the College for Financial Planning in Denver, Colorado. He has also completed advanced investment consulting training at The University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School.
Since 2009, David has served as a trustee of the West Virginia Investment Management Board which oversees management of the state’s $14bil for pension, insurance, and endowment investment programs and has served on an advisory board to the Pittsburgh branch of the Cleveland Federal Reserve Bank.
He has chaired the investment committees of the Boy Scout Ohio River Council and the West Liberty University Foundation. He is also a member of the Financial Planning Association, Wheeling Area and West Virginia Chambers of Commerce, Wheeling Rotary Club and Leadership West Virginia.
He has served on the board of directors for Regional Economic Development Partnership, West Liberty University Foundation, Business Advisory Council at West Liberty University, Financial Planning Association of Pittsburgh and Wheeling-area community programs like Habitat for Humanity and the Soup Kitchen.
As McKinley Carter has grown to be among the largest and fastest growing independent wealth management advisory firms in the country, David is regularly contacted by industry experts and peers, interviewed by industry publications, and invited to speak at industry conferences for his perspectives on industry trends and best practices.
William W. Carter, JD
Director of Wealth Management
Will Carter is a principal of McKinley Carter and serves as Director of Wealth Management and President of McKinley Carter Trust Company. Prior to McKinley Carter, he had founded Kanawha Investment and Trust Company in 2002 - leveraging his professional, entrepreneurial, and civic accomplishments from the 1980s and 1990s when he worked in the public policy sector, including work for WV Governor Gaston Caperton in the mid-1990s.
He has been a regular contributor of wealth management related columns for many local, regional, and statewide publications such as The State Journal, Wheeling News-Register and Intelligencer, Martins Ferry Times Leader, and The Dominion Post in Morgantown and speaks often on a wide range of financial, business, philanthropic and leadership matters.
Will has a law degree from New York University and bachelors and masters degrees in History from Harvard University. He is a certified business professional and member of the Aji Network and serves on the WV State Medical Foundation, the Investment Committee of the Kanawha Valley Foundation, the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, and Edgewood Summit retirement community. An upright bass and guitar player, Will tours with a contra dance band and was a leading force launching several music-related events, including the Appalachian String Band Music Festival, Charleston Jazz Series, Wine and All That Jazz and the Mountain Stage NewSong Contest. Raised in Charleston WV, he now lives in rural Putnam County with his wife and daughter and two foreign exchange students.
Brian T. Gongaware, CFP®, CRPC
Regional Managing Director
Brian T. Gongaware is a principal of McKinley Carter and serves as Regional Managing Director. Prior to McKinley Carter, Brian was the President and Senior Relationship Manager of NetWorth Investment Advisors, Inc. where he was responsible for managing the firm, new business development, and served as a wealth advisor/client relationship manager.
Previously, Brian was a Vice President with Mellon Bank's Private Asset Management Group where he managed over $250 million of investable assets for high-net-worth individuals and families. He also helped create the Private Investment Counseling Group, a group designed to work with client engagements of $2 million and greater.
Brian has a bachelor's degree in Financial Planning from Grove City College and an M.B.A. in Finance and Management from Duquesne University. He has completed the Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) licensing requirements, is a Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor (CRPC), and is a member of the Financial Planning Association of Pittsburgh. Brian also holds board membership in the Baptist Homes Foundation, Anchorpoint Counseling Ministry, and the North Hills Community Baptist Church.
Zachary T. Abraham
Director of Operations/HR
Zach Abraham is director of operations/HR and serves as the firm's chief compliance officer. He oversees many aspects of the daily operations of McKinley Carter, including client operations, business operations, human resource management, compliance, technology coordination, and facilities management.
Prior to McKinley Carter, Zach spent ten years working in organizational operations and human resource management for a large local hospital/healthcare system in northern West Virginia. During his tenure with the hospital/healthcare system, Zach organized and managed the Human Resource Department that serviced over 2,200 employees with multiple locations.
Zach graduated from West Virginia University with both his bachelor's and master's degrees in 1995 (BSLA) and 1996 (MSILR) respectively. He went on to earn his Professional in Human Resources (PHR) certification designation from the Society of Human Resource Management in 1996 and was selected as a Face of the Future in 2005 by Ogden Newspapers.
While attending WVU, Zach had a very successful football career with the Mountaineers as he progressed from a walk-on to a scholarship player and eventually was elected by his teammates as the 1994 team MVP.
Zach is very involved in his local community and the state of West Virginia and has served as a previous board member for The King's Daughters Child Care Center in Wheeling and The Westminster Foundation of West Virginia, Inc. He is a member of the Wheeling Rotary club, Society of Human Resource Management of the Upper Ohio Valley, and has served as a session member for Vance Memorial Presbyterian Church in Wheeling.
Thomas S. Anthony, CFP®
Director of Retirement Plan Services
Thomas S. Anthony serves as director of retirement plan services for McKinley Carter and has worked in the investment management industry since 1994. Prior to joining McKinley Carter, Tom was the Managing Member of Anthony Financial Management, LLC, a fee-only Registered Investment Advisor based in Wheeling, West Virginia.
Tom is a graduate of West Virginia University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. He obtained the Certified Financial Planner™ certification in 1997.
Active in the community, Tom is a member of the board of directors of Main Street Bank Corp in Wheeling, West Virginia, and serves on both the Investment Committee and the Audit Committee. A graduate of Leadership Wheeling, he is a former board member and Treasurer of the Wheeling Amateur Hockey Association.
Tom has served as a board member of The Estate Planning Council of the Upper Ohio Valley, St. Michael's Parish School, and the King's Daughters Child Care Centers. He currently serves on the board of directors of VNA Properties, Incorporated.

Director of Finance and Senior Wealth Advisor
A. Lawrence Crimmins, Jr. CPA/PFS is a senior wealth manager for McKinley Carter and serves as the firm's director of finance.
Larry's skill at working on complicated and time sensitive tasks for clients and the firm was enhanced by years of service including positions as an executive vice president, chief financial officer, controller, accountant, and treasurer. He also served over 24 years in various non-business roles, including Air Command Pilot and Director of Plans for the highly decorated 130th Air Wing of the West Virginia Air National Guard.
Larry is a graduate of the University of Charleston with a B.S. in accounting. He currently holds board leadership responsibilities in various community organizations including Charleston Civic Center, Edgewood Summit, and the Arthur B. Hodges Center. Larry is also a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the West Virginia Society of CPAs, the Charleston Chapter of CPAs, Charleston Rotary, American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Charles N. O'Data, CFRE
Director of Philanthropic Advisors
Charles N. O'Data, Certified Fund Raising Executive, has more than forty years of planned giving and fund raising experience.
After a career in retail, Charles returned to his alma mater, Geneva College, to serve as Vice President for Development and ended staying for thirty-seven years. His primary responsibilities included fund raising and endowment management. As a result of Charles' policies and his focus on planned gifts, the college's endowment grew from $8.3 million to the current level of $38 million. Currently, Geneva's planned giving program has an "expectancy pool" of future gifts of more than $20 million.
Charles was also the Director of Administration and Planned Giving for the Pittsburgh Symphony, where he managed the symphony's endowment fund, annual operating budget, and pension funds. Additionally, he was responsible for the financial management of Heinz Hall for the Performing Arts.
Charles is a recognized planned giving expert, having conducted extensive research on the subject in a dissertation titled, "The Characteristics of Effective Planned Giving Programs in Higher Education."
Active in his community, Charles has served as board chair of The Medical Center, Beaver, now Heritage Valley Health System. He is also the Founder and President the Beaver County Foundation, and has been named Outstanding Fund Raising Executive for the western Pennsylvania region of the Association of Fund Raising Professionals.
Jeremy T. Roseberry
Corporate Operations Manager
Jeremy T. Roseberry serves as Corporate Operations Manager for McKinley Carter and is tasked with developing strategies for improving efficiency within the firm’s regional offices.
In addition to his Operations responsibilities, Jeremy is responsible for managing the firm's merger and acquisition activity as well as working closely with management to plan, implement, and execute short- and long-term strategic management and growth initiatives.
In addition to his work at McKinley Carter, Jeremy serves as an Adjunct Professor teaching Financial Management and Corporate Finance at an accredited University.
Jeremy holds a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from West Virginia University and an MBA from Florida Atlantic University. He has also received his Certification in Financial and Valuation Modeling.
Prior to joining McKinley Carter, Jeremy was responsible for a 14-employee derivatives team at a major US bank. He also owned a consulting firm where he assisted clients in raising start-up capital, business planning, developing efficient capital structures and corporate strategy.
Chief Administrative Officer
With over 36 years of experience working in the professional services industry, William R. Shipley, CPA, serves as Chief Administrative Officer for McKinley Carter.
Immediately prior to joining McKinley Carter, Bill was Executive Director of a 100-plus lawyer regional law firm where he was responsible for overseeing the administration of the firm, including financial, human resources, records management, information technology and operations for the firm’s various offices.
Bill began his professional career upon graduation with Price Waterhouse, LLP, now PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP. For nearly 30 years, Bill served the firm’s clients with responsive advice regarding various tax matters, enterprise risk management, system integration and Sarbanes-Oxley compliance. Bill was admitted to the firm’s partnership in 1988 and retired in 2004, having served firm clients in three different practice offices and the firm’s national office.
Bill is a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor’s degree in Business Management with a concentration in Accounting. Bill is involved with a number of community and civic activities, including serving as Chairman of the Hampton Township Municipal Authority, Board member and Audit Committee Chair of the Foundation for Indiana University of Pennsylvania, his alma mater’s College of Business Advisory Board and Board member of River City Brass. Professional memberships include the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants and Financial Executives International.
Brian S. Sommers, CFA
Chief Investment Officer
Drawing on over 20 years of investment experience, Brian leads McKinley Carter Wealth Services' investment team. In this role he oversees the formulation of investment strategies and the selection of investments for our individual and institutional clients.
Before McKinley Carter, Brian was the director of equities at a large institutional firm, where he was responsible for the research and portfolio management of institutional pension plans.
Brian has managed Large Cap Value and Large Cap Core equity portfolios for institutional equity clients for over 6 years. Previously, he was a Portfolio Manager for Parker/Hunter Asset Management where he managed the assets of high-net-worth clients and was responsible for investment decisions regarding both the equity and the fixed income portions of the portfolios. Brian also managed individuals' portfolios for Key Asset Management in Cleveland, OH.
Over his career, Brian has managed portfolios for a variety of clients including Taft-Hartley, endowments, foundations, corporations, individuals, and public entities. He has held positions in investment consulting and client service for both institutional and high net worth clients.
Brian has an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh's Katz Graduate School of Business, is a Chartered Financial Analyst and a member of the Pittsburgh Society of Financial Analysts and the CFA Institute.
Brian is also a regular contributor of financial and investment-related columns to many local, regional, and statewide publications such as The State Journal, Wheeling News-Register and Intelligencer, Martins Ferry Times Leader in Ohio, and the Dominion Post in Morgantown. He is often invited to speak about investment and economic topics by business groups, television and radio stations and has been featured in The Wall Street Transcript.
